Manado is located on the very northeast tip of the Minahassa peninsula, the northeastern arm of Celebes island. It is set at the foot of Mount Klabat (6,634 feet, 2,022 m), about 600 miles (970 km) northeast of Ujung Padang. The exotic capital of the former spice-trading centre of the Celebes, lush Manado still produces a bumper crop of spices. But most people come here to explore the island's 54 volcanic peaks, where monkeys, hornbills and rusa deer thrive, or to enjoy some of Indonesia's finest coral reefs, including world-famous Bunaken island. Other attractions include the local handicrafts including bamboo and cane working, wood carving, and basketry and the remains of a fortress built by the Dutch in 1658.
